Christmas decorations are popping up even earlier this year. It seems that we are all eager for some hope and light in our lives after what’s been an especially tough year for many. One of the ways I like to prepare for Advent every year is to make a homemade wreath for the front door. I love the purposefulness of foraging through my backyard to find greens and clipping each branch with the express intent of adorning my wreath. This year, my two-year-old helped collect evergreen branches with me, and it struck me that just one year ago, she was barely walking. I’m grateful for the rituals of the season that help me mark time as the world around me changes. As I weave my circle of evergreens, my fingers tell the story of Christ’s everlasting and enduring love—the hope of life renewing itself, of spring turning to winter and then to spring once again.

Whether you decide to make your own wreath this season or pick one up at the store, I pray that it would be a reminder to you of hope everlasting.

Supplies:

Wire wreath form (Amazon, Walmart, any craft store)

Floral shears

Greenery (foraged or store-bought)

Accents — berries, leaves, ribbon

Start by weaving your greenery into your wreath form. I like to space it out in thirds to make it even.

Make sure you go in and out of the wreath form to keep greenery secure.

Continue adding in greenery in a circular manner. Tuck in the ends by weaving them into the wreath form.

Some parts of the wreath will be more bare than others. Snip off small pieces of greenery to fill in these spots.

Keep filling in and rotating the wreath until it is as full as you wish.

Add in accent pieces like berries, acorns, leaves, or pinecones (whatever you can find!).
