Prodigal Rambler & Sanctification in Process

by Carolyn Marshall Wright

As an artist working in a variety of water media, my work flows from a deeply spiritual and intensely personal vision. My journey as an artist began several decades ago as I felt drawn to the medium of watercolor; in the years since, my explorations have led to work in collage and acrylics. For me, the process of creating is one of worshipful expression and response to the emotions evoked by the world around us.

The two paintings included here are representative, not only of my joy in the extravagant beauty of these flowers, but also of my musings on the idea of being “complete” versus being “finished.” These paintings are complete; what needs to be said has been conveyed, even though not every white space is painted, and not every line filled in. In a sense, they embody the mystery of sanctification—believers in Christ are made complete by Christ’s sacrifice, and yet, the journey of sanctification is not yet finished.
