When and If

by David James

when I get
to heaven
maybe I’ll understand
why God uses
a hands-off approach
or maybe I’ll just grab
a coffee and baguette
and watch the world
spin out of control

I could ask
an angel or two
for their opinion
maybe it’s kismet
or the cost
of free will
though I’m guessing
it won’t matter to me
once I’m dead

I’ll probably forget
every burning question
as I sit down to lunch
with Gandhi and Shakespeare
surprised as hell that Gabriel
doesn’t use a trumpet
but a cornet
