Pop Quiz

by Peter Venable

The philosophy professor, having read Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave,”
placed it on the podium and scanned across the classroom.

“Try these on for size.” Touching a mole on his cheek, he bellowed

“Who am I?

Where have I come from?

Where am I going?

Why am I here?

Where do I belong?

Do I matter?

How long have I got?”

We wrote or keyed, then scrutinized his gaze.
Still as a Greek statue, he searched our faces.

“These are the most important questions of your life.”
He dropped The Republic into his briefcase.

A student raised his hand,
“When is it due?”
